Peppermint Tea Soon, (we hope) it will be spring, and for those of you who love to garden or like to keep a small kitchen
herb garden, here's an herb that's not only good to use in your kitchen, but it's a great one to keep in your medicine chest.
Peppermint tea has a lot of healthful uses. Menthol is the primary active ingredient found in peppermint. This essential oil helps ease headaches, nausea, diarrhea, gastritis and menstrual cramps. Peppermint
also contains enzymes which strengthen the immune system and contains potassium, calcium and B vitamins to help fight bone loss.
Growing peppermint is easy. Almost TOO EASY. It grows like a weed. It is best planted in a small pot
and then planted in the ground to help contain its wild growth pattern or planted somewhere it can be left to its own devices and spread everywhere. If you are planning to plant your own peppermint, find the
variety "menthe piperita". It has the highest amount of active ingredients including menthol. Teas can be made from either fresh or dried peppermint leaves. The fresh leaves have a larger content
of B vitamins. Pour one cup of boiling water over 1 tbsp of dried or fresh peppermint leaves. Steep for 10 minutes. The tea can be sweetened with honey, brown sugar or maple syrup, if desired.
Use it for: - Mild stomach disorders like nausea, vomiting or gas: Drink one cup of tea after meals, in small sips. Up to three cups per day.
- Relaxation, calm the nerves: Steep 5-6 tbsp of peppermint leaves in 1 qt of boiling water. Add to your warm bath water.
Soak for about 15 min. - Sore throats:
Use at the first sign of a sore throat. Make a fresh batch of tea. Allow it to cool to a
lukewarm temperature. Gargle with the tea several times a day. PRECAUTIONS:
1. Peppermint Tea has been shown to help ease nausea in pregnant women who cannot take any of the typical anti nausea medication due to their pregnancy. Limit the tea to 3 cups per day.
2. Never give Peppermint Tea to infants or children. They may have an adverse reaction to the menthol. 3. Peppermint Tea is not recommended
for individuals with heartburn or stomach problems due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD.) It could make symptoms worse.
